Australian Political Spin

I think the Aussies could teach our mob a thing or two about political spin, how about this!

Judy Rudd an amateur genealogy researcher in Southern Queensland was doing some work on her family tree. She discovered that Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s great-great uncle, Remus Rudd was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Melbourne in 1889. Both Judy and Kevin Rudd share this common ancestor.

The only known photograph of Remus shows him standing on the gallows at Melbourne Gaol.

So recently Judy emailed Prime Minister Rudd for information about their great-great uncle, Remus Rudd.

Believe it or not, Kevin Rudd’s staff sent back the following biographical sketch for her genealogy research.

“Remus Rudd was famous in Victoria during the mid to late 1800′s. His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Melbourne-Geelong Railroad.

Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life to government service, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad.

In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the Victoria Police Force. In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honour when the platform on which he was standing collapsed.”

  1. Hi Bill, its not the 1st time that Kevin Rudd has impressed me.

The spin is excellent and the fact that a reply was sent is even better. Most people would shy away from such enquiries but to spin it in this way was somewhat masterful.

I like the new look Bill, (side bar 1 fading).

Catch up soon my friend, Regards, Barry

Even though I have no time for politicians, I have to agree with you Barry that at least he had the b…. to respond to the enquiry. Bill

  2. Hi Bill, great post. I’m sure the stage did collapse underneath him…shame he was hanging from the rope around his neck at the time…sorry just couldn’t resist that one!

    Enjoy the journey.

  3. I particularly like this bit Mandy – “Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life to government service.” Bill

  4. Hi Bill

Even Alistair Campbell could only aspire to spin on that level. You have got to admire that reply, as it delivers humour with style. It even takes being economical with the truth, to a whole new level.

    Thanks for making me smile!

  6. Hi Bill,

Got to love us Aussies!!

We sure know how to tell a good yarn or 2 and just stretch the truth a little!!!!!

K-Rudd has definitely been an interesting prime minister. Our country was in the black when he went into power, he has spent everything and more, bungled so many spending sprees it isn’t funny that he is now spending money to fix the problems he created, all while giving a giggle and saying “She’ll be right mate”

He has been a giggle that’s for sure. Good thing the federal reserve can just print money on demand because he has had a ball spending it.

Not much of a politics person now. The two choices we have now are like tweedle dumb and tweedle dumber. Think I will be doing naughts and crosses next election.

Although I will give K-Rudd credit where credit is due, he certainly has brought the good old Aussie spirit back with all the slang, yarns, laugh and spins that goes with it.

    G’day Mates!!

    Jacinta :D

  7. Well Jacinta, we can go one better than that – we have many, even dumber than tweedle dumber types. Some of them would struggle to run a bath never mind the country. Bill

  8. Excellent piece of political spin Bill, (I wonder if they ever worked for Tony Blair). The last paragraph was brilliant, and every word was true. :-)

  9. I think even Blair would have been embarrassed at that spin John. Bill

  10. I wish more people would write blogs like this that are actually fun to read. With all the fluff floating around on the net, it is rare to read a blog like this instead.
