A Eureka Moment?

I have been pondering for a long time now in which direction to take in Internet Marketing. It has never been my intention to sell ‘how to make money on the internet’ types of product, highly profitable and autopilot friendly though they may be.

Despite having already written an ebook before enrolling on the John Thornhill Masterclass, it was on a subject that I couldn’t get excited about but one I nevertheless still intend to list on the Clickbank marketplace. When John asked us to list our interests, passions and hobbies for the product creation stage of MC I had forgotten an interest that I was really enthusiastic about during my diving days – wreck research.

It was only after reading through Robert Corrigan’s excellent and informative blog that an idea long forgotten, re-surfaced (no pun intended).

During these times I was heavily involved with the Hydrographic Department of the Navy in Somerset, UK. This is the organisation that surveys and charts the seas and oceans and the result is the production of charts used by commercial and pleasure craft worldwide.

The arrangement was that they would waive the usual fees for supplying basic wreck charting information in return for survey details on wrecks visited. This would be their latitude and longitude, Decca Loran co-ordinate positions (Loran was a 3 beacon navigational aid before GPS became universally used), depth of water the wreck was lying in, clearance to the top of the wreck for shipping navigational hazard at low water spring tides and the general condition of the wreck.

To get back to the point,  my wreck research involved buying certain publications that I still possess. After some basic research I find that some of these publications are worth many times what I paid for them. Obviously a lot more research is needed before I enter a very specific niche but the initial indications are that it could be very profitable and best of all, one I have a passion for. Time will tell.

  1. Brilliant, Bill, glad you have stumbled on something you are passionate about. I find it makes a BIG difference. I too started off with a pre written book, but there have been a further 4 books springing out of new passions I have found while I was on the course and through my partnerships with other marketers since.

    Enjoy the journey.

Thanks for the visit Mandy, hopefully as we progress the way forward will become a little clearer for us all in time. Bill

  2. Brother Bill,

I really wish I had half a clue what you where talking about but when I read what you say out loud, my wife says it makes sense.

    Probably does.

    Later, friend.

  4. Greetings Bill, 6/6/2010
Did I see in your Blog how you’re looking to expand your horizons?
You’re a man of the sea. Like Sir Peter Blake and Grant Dalton.
Consider this. I have a private correspondence school for sale.

We teach writing and photography (mainly) to adults.
Financially, it has been very kind to us for 19 years.
We now have a modest property portfolio, funded by what we do.
But having turned 70, I’m ready to sell the Institute and retire to my island.

Would living in the glorious South Pacific interest you?
You and your mate could be Principal and Registrar. (Same as my wife and me.)
See what we do. Click here >>> http://www.nzibs.co.nz
Then email me if you are genuinely interested. Thanks.

PS If you write as well as your BLOG indicates you do, you’ll do my job in a canter.

We are poised ready to sell our courses to the WORLD, through the Internet.
It’s truly exciting. But that’s for the next owner to benefit from.

  5. You put me in very exalted company with your two countrymen round the world sailors Brian, but my experience is limited to the Greek Islands and the UK, though they do say if you can sail around the Scottish Islands you can sail anywhere in the world.

Thanks for your offer and yes living in the South pacific does appeal but working for a living is now in my past, I am glad to say. Bill

  6. I’m glad that you’ve realised a hobby could be profitable Bill. That’s the best way to make money, simply doing what you enjoy doing anyway. ;-) I can imagine that good condition niche publications, would have a high value.

I’m currently pricing up my comics collection for sale. It’s great; I’m photographing and looking at childhood comics, that I haven’t seen for many, many years. I’m getting a similar buzz to that which I had when I first started collecting. :-)

I look forward to hearing about your plans for the wreck research niche. There must be an opportunity here to become a recognised expert.

  7. Fortunately John, like yourself, I am past the stage of needing to make money to survive. That’s why I never intended to join the rest in the traditional path of IM information products. Basically I am too lazy to keep producing products for the market. As with your comic niche, the one I have chosen still has competition, but we have to make sure we are better than the rest by giving first class customer service and excellent products.

When you look back at all the comics and toys that were thrown away when you were young and are now collectors items, especially if in good condition and in their original boxes, it makes you realise what
a pot of gold you were sat on. It’s early days but I have ten publications listed on Amazon, so time will tell if I have gone down the right path. I have realised that I am more suited to selling physical products than promoting other peoples information products and at the moment I am trying to source a profitable niche for ebay. Wow, that was a long reply.

I don’t like downloads either Bill, apart from the fact that once they’re set up you don’t have to do anything. ;-)

I have converted all the Internet Marketing products I have into physical books and CDs, however I haven’t tried eBay or Amazon yet. What’s your experience with them? Also what are your books about – walking, scuba diving or football maybe?

The books that I mentioned are all listed on Amazon and so far I have sold one from the ten I originally listed in June. They are mainly connected with either shipping losses or naval history. I have not tried eBay yet John, as Amazon have no listing fees and I thought I would test the water first. I have still not found a profitable niche physical product to sell on eBay or Amazon yet but will continue to research one. After searching goofbay.com I find that many eBay sellers are in fact not making that much profit after taking product costs and fees into account. Bill
