An All Time Great

The best cornetist that ever blew was Bobby Hackett (1915-1976). He was an accomplished exponent of the guitar, ukele, banjo and of course the trumpet. A member of the Glen Miller orchestra in the early 1940′s, he also played with Louis Armstrong and Benny Goodman amongst others. In the 1960′s he was the the official accompanist to Tony Bennett and the track ‘The Very Thought Of You’ was the first time I ever heard him and I immediately became a fan.

The Worlds 2nd Largest Whirlpool

When I used to sail the West Coast of Scotland and the Western Isles it was always my ambition to sail through the Gulf of  Corryvreckan. The gulf lies between the islands of Jura and Scarba and is one of the most  notorious stretches of water anywhere around the British Isles. It’s known for it’s fast tidal flow and whirlpools which are said to be the 2nd or 3rd biggest in the world, depending on where you read it.

The Russian Navy v Somalian Pirates

This video shows Russian Navy commandos on a Somalian pirate ship shortly after the pirates had captured a Russian oil tanker. The Euro Union navy that patrols these waters would not interfere because they feared there could be casualties. That says everything about their views on law and order to me. The Russians, and Americans too thankfully have a completely and more sensible outlook than us. They don’t pussyfoot around and consider the perpetrators more important than the victims as we do in Europe. When action is needed they take it and the criminals had better watch out.
